BLS and CPR: What’s the Difference?

If you are interested in taking a class that will teach you the skillsets needed to respond to a medical emergency, you are going to have several classes to choose from. These classes range from basic classes meant for most anyone to advanced classes that are designed specifically for healthcare professionals. One of the most common questions we hear at EA Certs, though, is in regards to the difference between a BLS training and a CPR class. To help you decide which of these two classes is right for you, we’ll take a closer look at these two classes and cover the key distinctions that set them apart.

BLS Training vs CPR Training: Which one is Best for You?

When comparing the differences between BLS certification classes and CPR certification classes, we can start by saying that BLS classes are more advanced than CPR classes and are typically meant for healthcare professionals. BLS stands for “basic life support”, and a broad range of life support training is taught over the course of a BLS class, including CPR.

A CPR class, on the other hand, is much more focused on teaching CPR alone and is more basic than a BLS class. Some CPR classes do include first aid training as part of the course as well, but even CPR with first aid is still less advanced than a BLS class. If you have not had any prior medical training but would like to learn how to administer CPR then you will be much better served taking a CPR class as opposed to a BLS class.

Once you understand these important differences between CPR and BLS classes, choosing between the two becomes much easier. If you are a trained healthcare provider needing to learn basic life support skills or receive your BLS certification then a BLS class is idea for you. If you have little or no prior medical training but are required to become CPR certified or otherwise interested in learning how to save a life through CPR then a CPR class is your best choice.
